Gunnar Thórdarson has been one of Iceland’s top musicians since founding the rock band Thor’s Hammer (Hljómar) at the start of the 1960s. He has composed close to 800 songs that have been released on records. In addition, he has composed music for numerous films, musicals and dramas. Gunnar has produced recordings and arranged music for numerous records. In recent years, he has focused on composing music and arranging bigger works for television, films, theatre, choirs and symphony orchestras. Gunnar’s opera Ragnheidur is based on the story of Ragnheidur Brynjólfsdóttir in Skálholt. It premiered in 2013 and won the acclaim of critics in many parts of the world. Gunnar is one of Iceland’s most respected musicians. He has received various awards during his career. For example, Reykjavik named him the city’s Musician of the Year in 2014, and Althingi (Icelandic Parliament) made him its Honorary Artist in 2018. In 2009, Gunnar received Iceland’s Order of the Falcon.
